Ranty ranty...
HOTLINKING

As of late I have been noticing more and more people hotlinking images from my journal. I politely ask people not to hotlink images, but I guess some don't listen. If you do not know what hotlinking is, here's the explanation:

Hotlink bandwidth theft, hotlinking, file leeching, bandwidth bandits, hot links, bandwidth leeching, hotlinks, external linking, remote linking, deep linking and direct linking are all words and phrases used to describe a single problem faced by many webmasters.

They describe the practice of building web pages that contain unauthorized content links, known as a hotlink, direct link, or remote link to files hosted by another site. Notice that we said content links and not navigation links that lead to another site. Content links are file references that the browser fetches to draw the page such as images, style sheets, scripts or even complete web pages that are rendered within a frame. In other words, these are embedded content or embedded objects within an html page.

The result of hotlinking is that the offending site is able to present its pages without paying for the bandwidth needed to serve up the stolen content. The victim site ends up paying the bandwidth expense for serving up the files without gaining any page views.

Many webmasters would not mind if an image were copied and hosted by another site. Especially, if permission was sought in advance. The objection in the case of hotlinking is to paying bandwidth bills for someone else's benefit.

You can read much more about this here: Hotlink bandwidth theft, hotlinking, files leeching...

Now, you should have no trouble about hotlinking images.

But now comes the point when people know what hotlinking is, yet they still do it. This is just plain stealing and rude. I, like many other webmasters I know, do not like it. Why? Because it's bandwidth theft, and it costs us money, and it angers us even more if we know you know what hotlinking is and what it does. There are some sites out there who allow it, and that is fine, but you should check first before you go and hotlink an image. Checking or asking before you hotlink an image or file is polite, and hopefully after you see if you can or cannot hotlink you will respect the webmasters wishes.

Now, there are always those people who like to be even ruder and say: "It’s just an image, get over it." Or "It’s not life and death here."

You’re right; it's not life or death. But it does cost us money, so that is why we’re so uptight about it. We pay for accounts, our sites, and our space. We are paying our own money to post picture or files for people to see. We don't have to, but we do. Most image services or sites have preset bandwidth limits for the month, and if the bandwidth goes over then it crashes until it resets for the month. Or they will charge you money for the extra bandwidth that is taken, thus making us pay more for our site or image host. And we don't like that. By hotlinking images you are taking the bandwidth from that site causing the site to crash or costing us more money. Would you like that if that was the case for you? Would you like it if we came to your house and took money out of your wallet, or take money off your paycheque? Of course not, but that is what you're doing by hotlinking from webmasters and journals.

Personally for me I am sick of it. I ask politely for people not to hotlink from my journal, but I still see people don't listen. I don't have to post all the pictures, but I do, because I like it and I like to make other people happy. But hotlinkers who have stolen from me just make me angry. If it keeps up (which I hope it doesn’t after this rant/post) I will most likely put this journal on friends only, so only people I trust can view all the Orlando/LOTR/Whatever photos I post. And believe me I don't want it to resort to that.

So now I am going to be posting a link at the bottom of every picture post to this one, so you will have no excuse to hotlink from me or other webmasters. If I still catch you hotlinking from me then I will replace the image file with this one: a hotlinking message. the file name will change constantly so don't bother hotlinking this hotlinking image. lol If you really do not know what hotlinking is if I catch you, then I will politely point you to this post and hope that you'll stop.

I am hoping that you will listen to this and respect the wishes of me and other webmasters. Having a site and posting pictures is supposed to be fun, supposed to be for people's enjoyment. If we can't do that anymore because of people hotlinking then you have no one else to blame but yourself if you hotlink.

Thank you. Now I’m going to make some new icons. ;)

[edit to add] Right clicking and saving images to your computer is fine, that's not hotlinking.

Hiyas
hey Bonnie remember me
If you decide to make you Livejournal friends only
Could you put me on your friends list?
Because, although you took me off your
list because you had to many people and you couldn't
keep up with entries, I still read you LJ and
enjoy the OB piccies.
So please when you decide to make it Friends only
may I be apart of your list?

I HATE Hotlinkers. Arrogant gits. I've seen people hotlinking to your pics on a board that I mod on, and when I do see them hotlinking, I always edit their posts and just post a link to your journal.

You could try using Photobucket.com for your image hosting...! It's free, and it's excellent...!
Bonnie[info]leggyslove on November 3rd, 2003 04:19 pm (UTC)
Thanks. :) I already have a photobucket account, but with only 4 pictures uploaded I've already gone over my bandwidth limit. >.

ok for the longest time, I had no idea what hotlinking was. and I am really, really really sorry, but I'm still not sure. I tried to read the site, but I don't really understand it. Its like another language or something.
I don't want to make you mad, so let me get this straight. Is it okay if i post your pictures on my lj, but upload the pictures onto my own web server thing? Or is the whole purpose of your post so that people don't steal your images? ah i'm so confused. I would totally abide by your rules.. if i understood. :\.

I'm sorry, but as much as I pretend to know about computers, this is all still Greek to me..

So, is it okay if we save the picture and then post it elsewhere? Or does this fall under the same category? I didn't think it did, but then I read that you wanted to disable right-clicking, which would mean we couldn't save the pictures either....

Sorry if I've been messing up your bandwidth :(
Bonnie[info]leggyslove on November 3rd, 2003 04:13 pm (UTC)
Yeah, you can save the pictures onto your computer, then upload them to your own image host. There is nothing wrong with that.

This is actually pretty funny. I've seen it done, I think. I've clicked on a link on someone's page and instead of the expected image or whatever, up comes a no-hotlinking message from the original host page! Only it didn't look like hotlinking, it looked like they were just posting a link to this other web page.

Anyway, love your sites, keep up the good work, I hope everything goes well for you!

How do you catch people hotlinking? Do you just happen to see them posting the images, or is there a way to find how many people have linked to that image?
SilverHawk: honestly[info]silverthoughts on November 3rd, 2003 07:21 pm (UTC)
If you have cpanel access, look at your latest visitors log. If you see certain images being visited repeatedly by a url that is not yours, then that url is direct linking your image.

Telling that person to not direct link doesn't work. Most are morons and will spit back at you. I've basically given up and have just set up my .httaccess file to block everyone on LJ (including myself) from direct linking my site. I just use free image hosts because writing this...won't change things. Changing your image locations is a waste of time because most people that are direct linking don't bother to check back a few weeks later to see that the image is gone. Setting up a password protection pop up does diddly. Because they are still direct linking to you. Still draining your bandwidth. I just forward all direct linkers to my graphics and photos to a free site.

Oddly, I gave a recent .httaccess blocking tip here just yesterday.

This is a great post. I think most people don't realize that they are doing something wrong, so this should be very informative.

So it appears most people use photobucket? I use fotopic.net. It's not really that great, the "alloted picture amount" (or something) gets exceeded on a daily basis so easily. So I got a greatestjournal and I uploaded pics to it and started using that. So far no problem, because the only place I really post them is in my lj. But I don't think it's going to be around long. I don't know that much about computers and bandwidth and whatnot, but it seems odd to me that they can offer 1,000 user icons, free picture space, and the journal features all for free.

Sorry for rambling, I'm in my dorm room pretending to study and I need something to distract me. :)

I know myself I have talked to people about that, and some of them...especially the younger folk, don't even realize how hotlinking works, and how it costs money/bandwidth to post pics.

That was very nicely put and hopefully people will pay attention! :D

hey
Just an idea, if you have a webpage, there's an HTML code to stop hot linking, I'm unsure of exactly how it works, but you can put it on your webpage so any links associated with that can't be hot linked: http://killer-bunnies.com/nodirectlinking.php

hope maybe that helped, if not it was atleast an idea :-p thanks for sharing the Orlando pics^^

Sorry to be an idiot - but just to be clear - you are okay with anyone right clicking and posting to their LJ or websites as long as they give you permission right? Please clarify, I hate upsetting people. Especially LJ friends. :) Thankies....
